Anti-Smoking PSA
After watching the video above, it is clear that the government has attempted to reduce the tobacco industry's market by publishing public service announcements strongly discouraging the public from smoking cigarettes. This specific video was aired in 1967 and many other varieties have been aired since then. The true question is, how effective are the public service announcements in reducing the number of people who smoke cigarettes? Many people today still smoke cigarettes, despite growing up watching hundreds of anti-smoking public service announcements. Is the money the government puts into these campaigns beneficial for our society? Or is the tobacco industry's marketing campaign that much more effective? What are your thoughts on the wave of public service announcements issued by the government?
Research Topic
I am focusing on advertising specifically in the tobacco industry. I am currently in a group of two other Comm 111 students at the University of Michigan, Adam Weinberg and Michael Myler, who are attempting to draw similarities between the advertising approaches of both McDonald's and the tobacco industry. This topic is important because of the negative health effects both of these industries have on modern-day society. By performing in depth research on both advertising campaigns, our group will be able to see the similarities between the two marketing strategies. Cigarettes and fast-food are both two products that have to be marketed in order to be profitable.
